Toby Moores on the Perfect Storm for Change
June 4, 2009
This is a can’t miss interview with some of the best insights on what is happening in the world right now and why this is perhaps one of the most important times to be alive. I met Toby Moores (aka sleepydog ) at Amplified 09 Cambridge in May and knew right away we were kindred spirits. In this interview he shows why, teaching me a thing or two, and you too! Hear more about how the economic crisis, the shift in management focus from efficiency to innovation and the rise of social media as an amplifier are colliding to create a perfect storm of change… This is 7 minutes well spent!

For the stat loving folk….
January 31, 2009
We were asked recently if we had any geographic stats on the number of people that use Social Media (blogs, LinkedIn, Twitter, FB, etc.) – specifically, they were looking for stats pertaining to percentage of people using Social Media based on population.
So we thought we put the question out to the Twitterverse and see what we could come up with.
Philippe Le Roux (@dioplr) pointed us to this eMarketer article that comes closer than anyone else was able to, but I think it needs to go even further to adequately answer the question.
I would like to see these stats broken out by type of Social Media tool (blog, podcast, socnet like Facebook/Twitter, etc) used in each region, and the percentage of the population using that specific tool. I can’t imagine the resources needed to collect this data, but if something like this exists today, I would love to know about it.

Here’s what’s been going on in Social Media over the last week or so. Missing something? Email me or add your news in the comments section!
One of the big news stories was the US Airways jet landing in the Hudson river. Once again Twitter was the first place many of us heard the news, complete with pictures via Twitpic. In a few hours the event was discussed in every imaginable media. With Twitter’s massive growth over the last year, it’s clear that the way we communicate has drastically changed.
Many of us wonder if Twitter is killing blogging, and Debbie Weil, one of Ad Age’s Twitter Power 150 shares her thoughts on the subject.
The Obama team’s use of social media has continued to be scrutinized, and Edelman’s DC Digital Public Affairs team put together a white-paper called “Inside Obama’s Social Media Toolkit” available for free download, and Jeremiah Owyang wrote about the “Citizen’s Briefing Book.
Dan Schawbel tells us how to build the ultimate social media resume. Just in time too with all these layoffs, and to help you find that job, the Purple People Collective launched to help ex-Yahoos find work. Oh and if the job market’s got you down, don’t forget that social media makes for a great support group.

How To Launch An Amazing Social Network In 4 Days
August 18, 2008

[I posted this article on my blog yesterday, but thought it might help a few SMC members if it were reposted.]
Last week, I strategized and launched a pretty large social network in four days, with the help of a really amazing team. In some days, I have done jobs like this before, in that I’ve launched a hyper-local social network last year in a couple of hours, but in many ways, I entered uncharted waters this week with this particular implementation.
To learn 13 of the things that you’ll need to do as a social web strategist, in order to get a huge, robust social network up in a ridiculously short time period, just follow this link. Damn the torpedoes!
