One of the big news stories was the US Airways jet landing in the Hudson river. Once again Twitter was the first place many of us heard the news, complete with pictures via Twitpic. In a few hours the event was discussed in every imaginable media. With Twitter’s massive growth over the last year, it’s clear that the way we communicate has drastically changed.
Many of us wonder if Twitter is killing blogging, and Debbie Weil, one of Ad Age’s Twitter Power 150 shares her thoughts on the subject.
The Obama team’s use of social media has continued to be scrutinized, and Edelman’s DC Digital Public Affairs team put together a white-paper called “Inside Obama’s Social Media Toolkit” available for free download, and Jeremiah Owyang wrote about the “Citizen’s Briefing Book.
Dan Schawbel tells us how to build the ultimate social media resume. Just in time too with all these layoffs, and to help you find that job, the Purple People Collective launched to help ex-Yahoos find work. Oh and if the job market’s got you down, don’t forget that social media makes for a great support group.

Yahoo started letting users add updates from their friends in their new Open Strategy. Rumor has it Yahoo mail users will have a lot more ability to filter their mail, view photos from non-Yahoo services etc without leaving their Yahoo Mail page, and see their friend’s updates in a FriendFeed like interface.
WordPress.TV launched with videos from the creators themselves to show you how to get the most out of the popular blogging app, and videos from WordCamp as well.
Speaking of WordPress, Dan Zarella just release TweetSuite which shows a nifty icon so users can post your title directly to Twitter as well as show off the trackbacks linking to your post.

Shel Israel writes about not mistaking popularity for influence. There’s an interesting post on Mashable about top blunders from the social media gurus, with a little something we can all learn from. Chris Brogan reminds us that it’s not necessarily true the famous bloggers are the only ones with anything important to say, and to promote and encourage others to keep the conversations fresh. Blog Action Day showed how social media can help us raise our voices and awareness about critical issues and thousands of bloggers responded in their own ways. Nonprofit Bootcamp happened in San Mateo, and over 2000 people got the resources they needed to get down to business online. Nielsen online ratings showed huge traffic growth for several social media sites this year, especially Twitter, Facebook and Linkedin, while some other sites like Buzznet and imeem slipped a bit, and imeem may be doing some cutting back. FriendFeed announced their real-time API, so now you can keep up to date on your friends in real-time.

- Lijit search just added advertising to it’s bag of tricks.
- Twine can help you track your bookmarks and other content, and learns what you like the more you use it and then makes recommendations based on your usage.

My favorite new Twitter App, TweetDeck launched in beta on the 4th of July.
I also discovered ClipMarks, which allows you to clip parts of a page and send it by email, to your blog, FriendFeed, or add a Clipmarks widget pretty much anywhere you want to.
And last but not least, check out TwitterPacks, a wiki that groups twitter users by areas of interest.
