Help! London group need a place to cop a squat: ASAP!

April 16, 2007

We just learned our regular venue in London (Fleishman Hillard) is not available to us for this Thursday, April 19th.  Whoops!

Is there another fine business out there willing to open their doors to a crew of 15-20 for a couple of hours Thursday night?  If so, please shoot an email to lloyd.davis [at] gmail [dot] com.

Many thanks!

New Cities coming in March/April

March 18, 2007

We have been working our little fingers to the bone and are happy to announce the launch of four new SMC groups over the next 30 days:

There are another seven cities that have been requested, and we will be making additional announcements in the near future, so keep watch here on the SMC site. Please also keep in mind we are building the organization smartly (not slowly), so we can properly use the resources we currently have to assist with local event management and promotion while continuing to establish connections between the cities to extend the knowledge beyond your own backyard.

If you wish to launch SMC in your home town, please add your city to the wiki and Howard Greenstein (CEO) will contact you shortly to get the ball rolling.

And to see ALL cities currently gathering, please check out our Events page.

We live in audio-visual age.

March 9, 2007

Guest post by Ronna Porter

But so far, we’ve concentrated most attention on video and visual content, and gained only limited benefits in terms of communication, community and distinctiveness from sound and music when it comes to social media. Yes, podcasting is an audio medium, but how many podcasts out there are truely exploiting sound? Research shows that although 83% of all commercial communication is visual, there is a 65% chance that our mood will change when we hear a new sound (see http://www.brandsense.com). I believe we haven’t even scratched the surface in integrating great sound that supports rather than gets in the way of good communication.

Involved in the Social Media Club since its creation, and an active member of the London group, I’ve offered to drive the debate on the use of sound in social media, and I’d love to include your input:

  • Attend or watch-out for content from the next London group meeting on 15 March (see http://www.socialmediaclub.org/events/ for details)
  • Email me with your questions, topics you’d like us to discuss, or ideas to share. Are your issues based upon skills, copyright, access to resources, technical know-how …? Does sound matter?
  • Comment on some of the posts in the Sound Strategies blog, or email your thoughts on these questions:
    1. What sticks in your memory? Marketers and communications agencies espouse the importance of music and sound in the promotion of identity and brand. What sounds have stayed with you?
    2. New thinking: Sound Strategies maintains a large collection of current research articles dealing with the use of sound and how we react with it. We’ll show you ours if you show us yours!
    3. Cool sounds: Have you heard any examples of the effective use of sound? Where … and why?
    4. Sound – too much or too little? Technology has provided us with multiple platforms for engaging with sound, but what are the minuses as well as the pluses?
    • Look out for and contribute towards an ongoing dialogue in putting the audio into audio-visual!

For those lucky enough to be in Las Vegas – have fun and learn lots!

    What happens in Vegas…

    March 4, 2007

…won’t stay in Vegas. It will be podcasted, photographed and blogged. :)

The Social Media Club founders are headed to Sin City for the NewComm Forum (March 7-9) and Community 2.0 (March 12-14) conferences and would like to invite you to join us for the official launch of the Social Media Clubhouse.

The idea behind the Clubhouse is to provide a low key space where you can hang out with your peers to blog, vidcast, podcast, and chat the night away. It is a space where you can get a comfortable bed to sleep in for $125 per night which includes transportation to/from each conference in our styling six-passenger van (check the wiki for availability). This house also comes with a pool, spa, home theatre, and a pool table, so there will be a few offline events as well. And for those not staying with us in the house - we are only five (5) short minutes to the Venetian and 15 minutes to the Red Rock, so bouncing back and forth is a breeze.

We do not currently have staff or the budget to keep the house open 24/7, but we will plan to have it open each night after the conference (s) and on the weekend inbetween the two events. A full schedule will be available on the SMC wiki and will be updated on Wednesday (3/7) morning.

We would also like to put the call out for sponsors interested in supporting the Clubhouse. We offer several ways for you to participate, or, if you just sold your company to Google and you have a few dollars to burn - take a look at sponsoring the whole she-bang. We are not a venture-backed company, so if the party/BBQ expenses are not covered, we will ask everyone to chip in a few bucks to help defray the cost. Most folks we spoke with said they wouldn’t mind, but I am hoping for a sponsor (or four) so stay tuned - or call me if you know someone who would like to help out.

    See you in Vegas!

    ——————–

SMC T-Shirt Contest(s): Win a Shirt, a Little Fame and Our Undying Love!

We are looking for funky and fresh designs, something people would be proud to put on their chest and back. A good example of a cool T-shirt design is the one Greg Narain designed for the Web 2point2 unconference. It not only played into the messaging perfectly, it was a great conversation starter and something most folks could relate too. Thanks again Greg - that was really kick ass. All entries will be posted to the SMC site and will be voted on by your peers. And if yours is/are the winning design(s), you will get a free T-shirt with your design on it, a Professional SMC Co-Founder Membership ($250 value), a $100 Amazon gift certificate, link love galore, and full bragging rights. Not a bad deal I think. And it probably goes without saying that your completed design should have something to do with ‘Social Media’ (open for interpretation) and/or slogan “If you get it, share it”.

Contest rules and details can be found online and we hope to see your designs soon!

    ——————–

    SMC Gatherings Around the World

We have a fresh round of local events coming up over the next month and hope you can join one of us at one of them:

Los Angeles, Seattle, and Vancouver gatherings are in the works and we are looking into launching groups in Silicon Valley, Denver, Philadelphia and Toronto shortly!

To get information on an existing gathering, please visit our Events page.

Don’t see a group in your local area yet? Sign up your city on the wiki and we will contact you to help SMC launch in your backyard (well, not literally, but you get the idea).

If you don’t know about what happens during our meetings, check out these two posts with audio from the February NYC and San Francisco events.

    ——————–

Are You a Member of the Club?

You may have seen the membership button on the navigation, but perhaps wondered why you would join as a member, when all you have seen so far is the blog and our events. The thing is, by registering as an open member, you are showing your support of our desire to build a community of social media practitioners and champions. A statement of that desire through our registration form is a great first step towards the mutually beneficial work we are doing. You need not pay us money to be supportive of our efforts.

We have always had and always will have an Open Membership option for free - for those who want to participate but either don’t have the money or simply don’t want to pay.

We have been seeking co-founders and paid memberships as a form of ‘community financing’ to help us ramp up more community services (to be announced shortly). It also could very well save the life of one of Chris’ very, very tired credit cards. :)

So if you have received any benefit from the events we have organized, or if you see the need for a community organization to support this emerging new form of communications and want to be involved in creating it, please register today as an Open Member.

If you are a member of the club already - we can’t thank you enough. With over 120 registered members and about 40 paid members, it warms the cockles of my heart to know that all this hard work is making a difference and helping people to connect with the people, ideas and resources they need.

    ——————–

    We Sure Love Those Links

When you blog, podcast, videocast or do some other Social Media ‘thing’ and wish to link to Social Media Club, please use .COM not .ORG address. We are moving everything over to the .COM and this will not only reduce confusion, but also doesn’t divide our search engine mojo up to two domains. You get it. Thanks.

    ——————–

Introducing the ‘They get it’ Podcast

You may have caught a blog post or three on the podcasts we have done recently with some people we know who really ‘get’ Social Media. We are going to be producing more of these as we go forward, talking with other smart people who have a deep understanding of what is happening here. As Doc Searls says, there is something of “Greater Significance” happening – the people we are talking to in this series can truly “see the forest for the trees” and will help you see it too.

Or, you can subscribe to the feed and never miss an episode! If you would like to nominate someone to be interviewed for the ‘They Get It’ series, please end an email to theygetit@socialmediaclub.com with a short note introducing the person, and why they ‘get it.’

    ——————–

Last, but not least. Have you signed up for the SMC mailing list yet? Feel free to join the one in your town, or, if you’re not in a town with a local group meeting yet, join the more general purpose SMC-List. Simply click on the title, and follow the instructions of the form to join that mailing list.

    Be well you Media mavens.

    Cheers,

    Chris, Kristie and Howard

SMC T-Shirt Contest(s): Win a Shirt, a Little Fame and Our Undying Love!

    February 6, 2007

I have tried to come up with something witty and pleasurable to the eyes on my own, but I seem to be missing that artistic gene required to produce a good looking product (thanks mom), so we would like to ask the SMC community to stir the creative being dwelling within and help us design the Member* and Cofounder T-shirts (offer a design for one or both – whatever floats your boat).

We are looking for funky and fresh designs, something people would be proud to put on their chest, as our hope is the SMC tee is the one people go to wear over all others sitting in their closet (so we are a little selfish, do you blame us?). A good example of a cool T-shirt design is the one Greg Narain designed for the Web 2point2 unconference. It not only played into the messaging perfectly, it was a great conversation starter and something most folks could relate too. Thanks again Greg - that was really kick ass.

And it probably goes without saying that your completed design should have something to do with ‘Social Media’ (open for interpretation) and/or slogan “If you get it, share it”.

All entries will be posted to the SMC site and will be voted on by your peers. And if yours is/are the winning design(s), you will get a free T-shirt with your design on it, a Professional SMC Membership ($100 value), a $100 Amazon gift certificate (per winning design), link love galore, and full bragging rights. Not a bad deal I think.

And every contest has a few ‘guidelines’, here are ours:

    • You can enter as many designs as you like.
    • T-shirt designs may be used on any style of T-shirt including short sleeve T-shirts, long-sleeve T-shirts, girly T-shirts, etc. though keep in mind the main shirts coming in the Member* kits will be short sleeve versions (other styles will be available for sale in the SMC Store which will be coming shortly and all proceeds going towards expanding SMC around the world). Feel the pressure yet? There is so much good that you can do here!
    • As for colors, we were originally leaning towards one black tee and one kelly green tee, but we are open to anything. So actually, ignore what I just said as I don’t want anything to stifle the designer in you.
    • Designs may include front, back and sleeve elements. Just please keep the design off the seams.
    • Use a maximum of four (4) colors for your design - no gradients or transparent layers please.
    • Feel free to use the SMC logo, existing SMC slogans or your own words/graphics to complete your design. All we ask is that you stay away from using third-party logos, trademarks or copyright material.
    • We also cannot accept designs with profanity. Sorry. I know this will disappoint some of you.
    • Save the design as an .eps file and then send to socialmediaclub [at] gmail [dot] com by March 11th for your chance at some free cloth. Please note by entering your design, you give SMC ownership of your design and rights to print it on a T-shirt.

So crack open Photoshop, let the creative juices flow and show us what you’ve got!

    * These shirts will be given to all Professional level and above Members and will be available for sale in the SMC Store (coming soon).

UPDATED:  We have extended the contest out until March 11th.  So get those designs in!

    NMRcast #14

    January 28, 2007

Following the 3rd Thursday event held on the 18th, the last week has seen a flurry of activity in the blogosphere addressing the value (or lack of value) for a social media news release. Chris Heuer, Tom Foremski, and Shel Holtz review the various points different posts have made and how it can affect the develoment of the social media release.  Shel put together a list of the posts they reviewed which can be found on his site (and we encourage you to sift through them all).
NMRcast #14 (29-minutes) can be downloaded (MP3, 13.3 MB), or you can sign up for the RSS feed to get it and future shows automatically. (For automatic synchronization with your iPod or other digital player, you’ll also need a podcatcher such as Juice, DopplerRadio, iTunes or Yahoo! Podcasts, or an RSS aggregator that supports podcasts such as FeedDemon).

A big ‘thank you’ to Shel for hosting and managing the NMRcast for us! If you would like to listen to previous NMRcasts, please check out the For Immediate Release website.

    NMRcast #13

    January 22, 2007

This latest episode was recorded live from the The Third Thursday meeting that took place at Shine SF in San Francisco on January 18, 2007.

Mike Manuel announced the new partnership between the Third Thursday group, SNCR and the Social Media Club and then we delved into the main topic for the evening, the Social Media Release (’SMR’). The panel discussion was led by Chris Heuer, and featured Shel Holtz, Brian Solis, Tom Foremski, and special guest, Joel Tesch from BusinessWire.

The SMR topic fueled quite a bit of conversation following the event, most of which can be followed through Technorati, though I am finding some folks tagged it with social+media+release, others with social+media+press+release so it is not as easy as I thought to round them all up. Which is why we have Brian Solis who did a bang up job in collecting several key points on the topic to get everyone up to speed. Thanks Brian.
You may download the NMRcast here (MP3, 34.6Mb, 1:15:23). You may also subscribe to the Speakers & Speeches RSS feed to get these and future podcasts automatically. For automatic synchronization with your iPod or other digital player, you’ll also need a podcatcher such as the free Juice, DopplerRadio, iTunes or Yahoo! Podcasts, or an RSS aggregator that supports podcasts such as FeedDemon. To receive all For Immediate Release podcasts including the twice-weekly Hobson & Holtz Report, subscribe to the full RSS feed.

A big ‘thank you’ to Shel for hosting and managing the NMRcast for us, and to the folks at Shine SF for opening their space to the group.

    Beercasting from Podcast Expo 2006

    January 8, 2007

    PME_Day_2 - 68.jpgWhat is a beercast you ask?

Beer + conversation + digital recorder = Beercasting

I think our buddy Greg Narain coined the term back in 2004 when he toured the country, visiting something like 11 cities, recording 300+ podcasts on close to 100 different topics - and all along the way, a pint of brew in his hands.

It can happen anywhere, at any time, and takes very little in resources to get off the ground. And it is usally a good time for everyone involved. Well, if you like beer that is. And of course, you like to talk. And then there is that thing of having to being ok with being heard as the odds are good at least one other person (and possibly a bazillion people) will listen to your chatter online. But beercasting sure does add to the hilarity of things.

Giovanni Gallucci just sent me the link to a beercast from the Podcast Expo last September. On the mic are several folks including Chris Heuer, Mike Hudack, Greg Narain, Melissa Gira, and Vic Podcaster. Providing the beer, Chris Brogan and the fine folks at Pulver Media.

The subject? What does ‘Social Media’ as a term mean.

Now, keep in mind they have been drinking (it is a beercast afterall), but to clarify, they are not drunk. I think the podcast is well worth a listen to, and it is an interesting topic at hand.

There are also a couple of photos available on Giovanni’s Flickr account to give you a visual of who you are listening to.

BCE has also launched a blog to assist the speakers and the participants to connect before, during and after the conference. On hand will be SMC Co-Founder, Howard Greenstein, who will lead a discussion on what Social Media really is, review some of the activities at the other Clubs, discuss goals for SMC in 2007, in addition to covering other topics suggested by the Atlanta participants.

The event will take place from 6pm to 8:30pm and is free to attend, though we do ask you to pre-register so we may prepare the room for your arrival and ensure there are plenty of drinks for everyone.

Hope to see you in Atlanta!
