Social Media Club NYC – March 25th meeting
March 26, 2009
Last night in NYC, Social Media Club met at the Roger Smith Hotel for our monthly meeting and a Tweetup/Party sponsored by H&R Block.
The meeting started with a presentation by Fraser of Adaptive Blue, showing Glue. Glue is a plugin that works on sites where you look at music, movies, books and many other ‘objects.’ It lets you see reviews, and also lets you share information about those objects with friends. It also lets you take actions – one action was viewing a movie on IMDB and via Glue adding it to your Netflix queue.
We took a brief raffle break, courtesy of Pearson Education Publishers, who provided us with books from Addision Wesley, IBM, Prentice Hall, FT Press, Que and Sams. We gave out books including 33 Million People in the Room, Putting the Public Back in Public Relations, and a host of others.
Then Tina Alexander showed us about the community sites currently in beta on The Wall Street Journal’s site. While she admitted that the community software, written in house, isn’t ground breaking, the WSJ is doing a bunch of things to keep conversation on a professional level, including requiring real names, and offering photo avatars to make sure you know who’s really giving the advice or opinion. The community features looked quite solid, and Tina was open to feedback from members of the group who were already beta testers. She gave out 1 month trial codes to the entire group, as well as very cool WSJ mugs for all attendees.
After another Book raffle break, Wilma Hayes of H&R Block got up to tell us about items relevant to freelancers and others running small businesses. We learned that there have been over 500 changes to the tax law in 2008 alone, and that there are all sorts of credits people often don’t take advantage of. @LesBlatt tweeted “$282 billion left on the table last year by taxpayers who did not claim all deductions and exemptions due” and “Job search expenses are deductible – from ink toner for printer to money paid to a recruiter.”
Once the group was done asking Wilma questions, it was off to the Starlight room for the H&R Block-sponsored Tweetup. The team from the Roger Smith Hotel really made us feel welcome, with good food and a great spread of crackers and cheeses and snacks and drinks expertly poured by bartender Paul. Thanks to Martha, Brian, Adam and the entire @RogerSmithHotel team for their generosity in supporting this event.

Social Media Club NYC meets Content Nation Author John Blossom
February 25, 2009
At last night’s Social Media Club meeting in New York, John Blossom, author of the book Content Nation joined more than 30 attendees to discuss his book and engage in a lively debate.
Topics ranged from the future of Twitter’s business model to the future of the Newspaper industry’s business model. There seems to be a common theme – in the words of the philosopher Snoop Dogg, people have “their mind on their money and their money on their mind.” (link to lyrics- not safe for work.)
Our initial discussion on Twitter’s future business model included conjecture about Zappos. If Twitter were to charge for commerical accounts (not yet a fact), how would the over 400 Zappos twitterers be handled? They’re using their accounts both for work and for personal use. Many consultants in the room also noted they use their Twitter for both business and personal use, and were not sure how that would work either. Discussion was tabled until we know more.
Update: John published his slides and notes on “Content Nation Meets Silicon Alley, Madison Ave. and Wall Street.”
Social Media Week New York
February 4, 2009
Most people think of the Bay Area as “the” hub of Social Media activity. But, during the week beginning Feb 9th, New York will be hosting the Social Communications Summit (update: register with discount code “SMC” to save $50), The Shorty Awards, NYC Twestival, Online Community Unconference (update: register with discount code “friendofhoward” to save $25), Social Media Breakfast, plus O’Reilly’s Tools for Change.
To help people navigate this overload, SMC NYC friend Toby Daniels and a board of other folks in the community created Social Media Week NY. The site features a calendar of the events above, plus additional events being put on, unconference fashion, all around town.
Toby says:
“Much like Internet week, Social Media Week will bring together the New York community and draw attention to the incredible talent, innovation and entrepreneurial endeavor that exists in the city. Individuals, groups and organizations will be invited to program their own events and schedule their own activities.”
SMC NYC is proud to support this effort that is helping put some focus where it belongs, on the the Media capital of the world
Please follow @socialmediaweekny on Twitter for real-time updates, and we hope to see you in NYC next week.
(If you can’t make it until 2/24, please join Social Media Club NYC for our monthly meeting.)

Help a research project – Facebook Groups in Business
July 10, 2008
Social Media Club NY member and Organizational Development consultant Jenny Ambrozek asks for help on the following issue:
21st Century Organization: Facebook Groups in Business: Call for Best Cases
Should Businesses Be Friends with Facebook? While our investigation provided insight into the dynamics of 10 Facebook Groups by tracking activity data over a 10 week period, we realize thousands of organizations are using Facebook Groups every day.
Jenny and her team are seeking best practice case studies regarding using FB “externally to build brands and market products, and ii. Internally, to bring employees together and share work, while at the same time allowing them to connect to their external networks.”
Check the site for how you can help them in their research.
Social Media Club NY Meeting, 12/11/07
December 12, 2007
Last night, Business Wire hosted SMC New York for a panel on “What Worked and What Didn’t in Social Media in 2007.”
I moderated a panel with Jack Myers, Founder and CEO of Myers Publishing, Joel Smernoff, President and COO of Paltalk, and Peter Himler, Founder and principal of Flatiron Communications LLC. Being moderator, I couldn’t really take too many notes, but thankfully2 intrepid bloggers captured some of the action.
Jenny Ambrozek posted in “Social Media Club Gathering 20071211: A Gorilla on YouTube” a thought from panelist Jack Myers:
“Jack proposed a potential outcome of the current writers strike is fundamentally changing the traditional television broadcasting industry. Given the impact of digital technology on transforming the recording industry, an entirely reasonable prediction.”
Les Blatt wrote some comments about the other Gorilla in Social Media, Facebook:
“There was a long discussion of Facebook’s Beacon conflict. Did Facebook hurt itself with Beacon? Possibly, although they do seem to be trying to fix it – the move from opt-out to opt-in, while perhaps not handled as smoothly as it should have been, is at least a move in the right direction.”
I know that the intrepid Steve Eisenberg, who helped organize the meeting, has recorded audio and we’ll link to it when it’s posted.
Social Media Club Blog named to Top 100
November 26, 2007
According to Tom Pick, Virtual Hosting Blog has picked the Top 100 Social Media and Social Networking Blogs for 2007, and SMC was one of them. (I can’t confirm this as Virtual Hosting blog is having an error on that page at the moment.)
Lots of credit to Chris Heuer, for setting this whole deal up and writing some great stuff, to Jason Chervokas, who wrote some excellent pieces for us this year, and of course, Francine Hardaway, Connie Reece, Kristie Wells, and everyone else who contributed to making the SMC blog a useful source of information in the field.
Social Media Club NYC – July 18th Meeting Notes
July 18, 2007
Tonight’s Social Media Club meeting is at PR Newswire – thanks to those folks for hosting. Thanks to Steve Eisenberg, Laurence Koret and Jeff Keefer for getting this meeting organized.
John Havens is talking about the Transparency Manifesto. John is working with Shel Holtz on this project as well.
He has just retold the story of what happened when he invited Scoble to Podcamp and a tempest ensued (because someone posted this incident out of context and without asking for clarity.) Scoble had to respond, etc. All finally worked out well, and of course Scoble wasn’t asking to be paid, he was really gracious and ultimately awesome as usual.
He’s also talking about another issue we had when we (Disclosure: I was on the Podcamp NYC team so I say “we” as part of the team) had some issues with the New School.
Additional discussion on the challenges between transparency and when sharing all the information can hurt someone or some organization.
Paul Young who had started the “Anti-Astroturfing” campaign is here – talked about this campaign and why it was tough to get people to join – it is tough to get consensus on what astroturf is and what the manifesto was for them.
Discussion about interviews, attribution, and how and who gets credit when one contributes to this kind of manifesto.
Congratuations, Chris and Kristie
July 10, 2007
I thought it appropriate to take a moment from the business of Social Media to wish co-Founders Chris Heuer and Kristie Wells all the best on the occasion of their wedding.
I won’t link to their personal page here, but public photos are available on Flickr if you search for “chrisandkristie”.
I’m sure I speak for all the members of Social Media Club in extending our heartfelt congratulations and wishes for a long, healthy, happy and successful life!

“I am not a Web Guy”
June 26, 2007
Patrick Ruffini at TechPresident.com riffs on what Zack Exley wrote on his blog. When do we stop making the distinction between being an “Internet Strategist” and a “Strategist” or an “Internet Communications Director” or a “Communications Director”?
I’m guilty of this as well. Looking at my business card, it says “Social Media Strategist.” But what I do is end up helping people understand the new strategies, and how they can be applied in conjunction with more traditional media and communications techniques.
Zack says:
Let’s remove “Internet” from our titles and resumes. The longer we
leave “Internet” on our name tags, the longer we’re enabling all this
bad behavior—and devaluing our own contribution to the movement at the
same time.
I’m not sure I’m ready to jump off this bridge, but, it is worth discussing in the context of Social Media. What do you think? Comment below, please!
