[...] Once again, the use of the term Social Media is under scrutiny by some of the loudest voices in the blogosphere. Robert Scoble’s post “what is social media” seems to have reignited a thread that Jeremiah Owyang started a couple of weeks ago that I responded to with my post, Is It Really Called Social Media, Yes!. Yes Dare Obasanjo is right, the Social Media entry in Wikipedia is woefully lacking, and there are many other very insightful points to consider in that conversation which point out reasons to be vigilant. Rather than diving in to a tit for tat on everyone’s points which would take me all day, I had a great conversation with Brian Solis this morning about a post he is writing which lead me to write this comment for Robert’s blog, which I decided to post here as well… [...]

Hey, great post, Chris. Personally, I like social media because it says what it is (i.e. is not a nonsensical term that requires definition to every person who hears it) and it's also less inside joke, tongue-in-cheek than web 2.0.

However, just in case the masses don't agree, we're prepared to convert to the acronym "SMG" on all our letterhead :-)

[...] Jeffrey Keefer asked “I have also been thinking about the word “Club” in the title here, and wonder the history of the thinking behind that.” in the comments on my post about why I think the term for the industry/movement/era is ‘Social Media’. I was so focused on the term Social Media, that I neglected to explain the reason I thought it best to call what we are doing a ‘Club’ instead of an Association or something else. It really follows the same pattern of thinking I referenced in looking at 37 Signals and is reflected in my third post to this blog, Building the Social Media Clubhouse and the first post The first rule of Social Media Club is… [...]

I really like how thought out this is, Chris. I have recently been thinking about the same topic, especially since I am proposing a research project around this and have not been able to come up with a more fitting term than social media. It does capture and include a lot.

Oh thanks Chris.

Perhaps you may want to update the text post above to clarify to readers that I actually do NOT hate the term "social media".

I updated my post to provide some clarity.

I apologize for being confusing.

Ah - thanks for the clarification - I guessed as much, but wanted to support that we feel (most obviously I think) that it is the right term and provide some insights on my thinking about this matter. I don't feel there is a better term, but am interested to hear those different perspectives...

Great points, very well thought out.

I need to clarify my post, which I didn't do a good job with.

I use the term Social Media a lot, in fact, it's my preferred term.

Other folks have been telling me they don't like that term "social media", so this post was a challenge to them to give me a better term.

If you look at my tags/categories on my blog, you'll see I've devoted quite a few posts to the term social media.

Could you please update this post to reflect my stance on the term?

Jeremiah = prefers the term "social media" until a better terms arises.
