The Social Media Release Under Attack


Earlier this week at Third Thursday, we talked about the Social Media Release and thankfully recorded the next NMRCast, so the full conversation will soon be online.  Stowe Boyd was in attendance and had some very pointed questions, which we felt we answered to a degree, but did not dive into more deeply so as to hear other voices in attendance.  His blog post entitled “Enough Already: Getting Social Media all wrong” was a one-sided commentary that failed to even link to this site or  Social Media Release Blog and has now been picked up by Robert Scoble and others.  Our response was posted over here, so please join in on the conversation and let us know your thoughts…   BTW, if you really want to know about this subject, please read the draft of the requirements we wrote.

I do feel your pain but I also think everyone/anyone interested in this will know Stowe, the SMC and the Social Media Release idea enough to make linking a formality, won’t they?

Anyway, one-sided stories are part of the NEW picture, aren’t they? The former audience doesn’t give a fig about your views. (not you specifically, of course). Good topic for the next meeting, eh.

Link magic is at work. One-sided blogs and misinterpretations never go unanswered. Anyone interested in the topic has full access to all sides and ample opportunity to add a new voice.

It’s all good.

Prognosis: The press release will die very slowly, if at all (pity). The social press release will gain adherents when all its contituencies see and feel the benefits. It will take time. Scoble will seize say opportunity to inject his mantra that blogging solves all communications problems. And that’s good, too, since it stirs the pot and attracts more conversation. That’s the thing about Scoble: he’s right even when he’s wrong.

Very good points Ian and Michael - I agree with most, except for the link issue, but that is more of a personal pet peeve.

In the end, we are all the better for having had the conversation - there have been good points all around, despite some of the combative rhetoric. Better still, there is a wider understanding of our efforts to help agencies understand the importance of social media, despite a perception among a few folks that all pr people, used car salesmen and lawyers should just go away ;)
