Beercasting from Podcast Expo 2006

PME_Day_2 - 68.jpgWhat is a beercast you ask?

Beer + conversation + digital recorder = Beercasting

I think our buddy Greg Narain coined the term back in 2004 when he toured the country, visiting something like 11 cities, recording 300+ podcasts on close to 100 different topics - and all along the way, a pint of brew in his hands.

It can happen anywhere, at any time, and takes very little in resources to get off the ground. And it is usally a good time for everyone involved. Well, if you like beer that is. And of course, you like to talk. And then there is that thing of having to being ok with being heard as the odds are good at least one other person (and possibly a bazillion people) will listen to your chatter online. But beercasting sure does add to the hilarity of things.

Giovanni Gallucci just sent me the link to a beercast from the Podcast Expo last September. On the mic are several folks including Chris Heuer, Mike Hudack, Greg Narain, Melissa Gira, and Vic Podcaster. Providing the beer, Chris Brogan and the fine folks at Pulver Media.

The subject? What does ‘Social Media’ as a term mean.

Now, keep in mind they have been drinking (it is a beercast afterall), but to clarify, they are not drunk. I think the podcast is well worth a listen to, and it is an interesting topic at hand.

There are also a couple of photos available on Giovanni’s Flickr account to give you a visual of who you are listening to.

So, I was pretty drunk at this point in time, but I generally held up well after my 6th or so beer at lunch time - though I was perhaps a bit obnoxious in trying to get my points across - sorry Mike. In the end though, it is a pretty good discussion - especially since I admit that I don’t know what social media really means yet.

Of course, that is to say that defining it for people who are not engaged with it is really tough. What it means will ultimately be determined by the market and what average every day people think it means, more so than what we think it means. Ultimately, I think we arrived at a good definition and at least several reasons why it is the term that will really define this era, more so even than Web 2.0….
