SMC’s Most Excellent Ping Server List

Once again, I was in need of the latest Ping Server List for a client’s Blog, but I could not find a decent one anywhere that was up to date (if you don’t know - a ping server is a computer that gets notified when a new Blog post is published). Chris Abraham wrote the most popular one a while back which I have previously used blindly as is, only to now find it is woefully out of date. WordPress has a pretty decent list as well, just as out of date. Since it is something I think we all need, I went ahead and collected all the ping server URL’s I found from the first 2 pages of Google results and started testing them.

Here is what I found:

  1. Many just don’t exist anymore as sites, let alone ping servers
  2. Many have had to be shut down due to splogs
  3. Several seem to have offloaded the ping server responsibility to someone else (Ping-O-Matic is still the WordPress recommendation)
  4. Several are not accessible to those URL’s (is it possible it just was not accessible to my browser and the method I used to test?)
  5. A couple were bought by Google or someone else bigger

So we are going to keep a page on the Social Media Club Wiki for resources like the Social Media Club Ping Server List which you can reference on an ongoing basis as what will hopefully be the most up to date list for those of you that want more than Ping-O-Matic. Hopefully, you will also update it if you find a new service (or if you are offering one) and update it if you find that one of these goes out of business.

To save you the first click if you are interested in this completely tested and verified list (as of 6PM PST 2006jan6), here it is…
